EFI 2022 Virtual Conference

May 23-25, 2022
Location: Virtual
Time: 11am to 3:30pm US Eastern each day

The Ecological Forecasting Initiative (EFI) is a broad, interdisciplinary effort aimed at promoting the use of forecasts to understand, manage, and conserve ecosystems and the services they provide. The EFI 2022 meeting was a 3-day community-wide meeting aimed at bringing together scientists, agencies, industry, and stakeholders to build a community of practice and advance research, applications, and collaboration around near-term (subdaily to decadal) ecological forecasts.

Given the remarkable consensus of the community from pre-registration, the meeting was held virtually (83% preferred virtual or were flexible about virtual or in-person options and 17% preferred in-person). This allowed for greater inclusion for people unable to travel.

The meeting provided opportunities to network, activities for early career individuals, short presentations or posters on the state of the field, and longer workshops and tutorials focused on skill development.

  • Talks were short 10 minute presentations.
  • Workshops were 30 or 60 minutes and were an opportunity for the community to teach each other specific tools, skills, perspectives, or an in-depth look at a forecasting project.  EFI is a community of practice, so workshops like these help build the community.

EFI Futures Outstanding Student Presentation Award

This award was given to promote, recognize, and reward an outstanding student presenter and provided valuable feedback to student presenters on their research and presentation skills.  Students presenting both Posters and Oral Presentations were eligible for this award.

Congratulations to Whitney Woelmer (Virginia Tech) for her poster “Undergraduate student confidence and understanding of ecological forecasting concepts significantly increases after completing a Macrosystems EDDIE module.”

Yiluan Song (University of California, Santa Cruz) won the award for her presentation on “Ecological forecasting of leafing and flowering phenology during climate change to inform public health”.  Both students won $50 to spend at the EFI shop.
